Desoxyribosides and vitamin B12 as growth factors for lactic acid bacteria.

چکیده
Rogosa, Tittsler, and Geib (1947) reported that many strains of Lactobacilluss bulgaricus, Lactobacillus lactis, Lactobacillus acidophtlus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, and Lactobacillus leichmannii failed to grow in semisynthetic media similar to those used for vitamin assay with other lactic acid bacteria, even though all of the then known B vitamins were added. Since that time oleic acid (Williams, Broquist, and Snell, 1947; Hutchings and Boggiano, 1947), pyridoxamine phosphate (McNutt and Snell, 1948, 1950), and an unidentified substance provisionally termed "LBF" (Lactobacillus bulgaricus factor, Williams, Hoff-Jorgensen, and Snell, 1C49) have been shown to be essential for the growth of certain of these organisms. A series of preliminary reports (e.g., Shorb, 1948; Kitay, McNutt, and Snell, 1949; Kocher and Schindler, 1949; Hoff-Jorgensen, 1949) has also established that certain of these org require vitamin B12, desoxyribosides, or certain reducing agents for growth. This report represents part of an investigation to determine the hitherto unidentified growth factors required by the above-named organisms. It describes the specificity and variability of several lactic acid bacteria in their requirement for desoxyribosides, vitamin Bi2, or reducing agents, and gives the experimental conditions under which these were determined.

Paper chromatography of vitamin B12 and related bacterial growth factors.
In a preliminary note (l), the present authors reported that Lactobacillus Eeichmannii 313 is capable of using six alternative factors for growth in vitamin Bn-deficient media. Two of these were found in vitamin Blz concentrates and presumably represent two forms of the vitamin. Hoffmann et al. (2) previously noted that crystalline antipernicious anemia factor (APA) (vitamin B1.J supports the g...

LactobaciUus bifidus (Lactobacilus acidophilus ATCC 4963) was previously reported (Skeggs et al., 1949) to require for growth, in an otherwise complete medium, either vitamin B12, thymine desoxyriboside, or intact desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The growth of L. bidus in the presence of DNA was found (Skeggs et al., 1950)1 to be inhibited competitively by yeast ribonucleic acid (RNA). Subsequent ...

Two strains of Lactobacillus leichmanii, ATCC 7830 and ATCC 4797, are generally used for vitamin B12 assay. However, the complex growth requirements and the lack of specificity to vitamin B12 of these lactic acid bacteria make the determination of vitamin B12 difficult (Hoffmann et al., 1948; Skeggs et al., 1948; Snell et al., 1948; Capps et al., 1949; Kitay et al., 1949; Peeler et al., 1949; W...

متن کاملAdaptations in growth factor requirements for lactic acid bacteria.
Adaptive processes in bacteria, whereby growth of organisms in deficient or drug-enriched media can be initiated through the production of new or latent enzyme systems, have been widely described. Reviews on this subject by Karstrom (1938), Dubos (1940), and Monod (1947) have provided examples of adaptation in bacterial carbohydrases and proteases, in enzymes of fermentation and glycolysis, and...
